It was a dark and stormy night...

Actually, it was dark but not so stormy. It was nice enough to wear flip-flops. Just ask Ed. I'll bet you didn't even notice the flip-flops. You were focusing on the shiny, shiny shirt.

Since the stage was about four feet off of the ground, you couldn't see the foot gear anyway.
Did I mention four feet from the ground? Four feet is a lot. It's more than a yard. Though four feet vertical is the same distance as four feet horizontal, it is wise to note that acceleration due to gravity only occurs in the vertical plane. Those present last Saturday understand the significance of this Newtonian observation.
