Halloween, Part 1
Last Saturday's party was a great success. VO5 got the ball rolling and won the prize for fitting the most band members on the tiny stage. Wonder's Pub filled up relatively quickly and, by the time Bob Manor and the Getaway Drivers took the stage, the place was hopping with dancers (even before the bunny squad arrived).
Thanks to Wonder's for hosting the event (whiched raised some funds for the Atwood Community Center). Thanks to the folks that helped work the door (you know who you are).
Here are a few pictures (there are many more to come):

Alert: Change of venue to Wonders Pub for 10/28 show
The Madison building inspector has put the kibosh on our little costume party. Here's an excerpt from his email to the community center organizer I've been working with:
"I have tried to be very supportive of what you want to accomplish in your fund raising activities. This one however is becoming the perfect storm. "
"The Perfect storm?"
Yeah, we're a bunch of bad Mo-Fo's alright! Trouble follows us everywhere. Come on! Don't blame us for the dangerous and crazy antics that our Billy bad-ass fans engage in.
Anyway, we've moved the event to Wonders Pub! Same time. The cover charge still goes to the Atwood Community Center…

…You Billy bad-ass, YOU!
Now that we're playing in a heated environment, please allow me to make some additional costume suggestions.
Here's a wonderful idea for those of you with perfect skin. Show off all that supple-ness baby!

For all of you manly men out there. Leather and hair.

Back to basics with a sense of rebirth?

Run wild. Run free!

What to where and wear?
Since the forecast is calling for temps in the 30's by Saturday night, it will be extra important that you plan your costume accordingly. May I make the following suggestions:
Our first lovely model looks lovely in this lovely fur lined parka. Stylish lovely grey and red boots and with matching spear complete the ensemble. Lovely!

Our next entry screams elegance. Well, it actually ROARS elegance! Who wouldn't want to be linked arm-in-arm with this fine specimen "dressed to kill."

Kenny comes to us dressed in warm colors. This quiet, casual look let's people know that you're comfortable with what comes your way...Even if it kills you.

The strong silent type always gets the girl. White tells them that your intentions are true. Your wide grin says, "I'm ready to listen to you, baby!"

This sleek outfit makes even the oldest soul seam young and hip. Passion and hot, hot, HOT!

See you Saturday at Ironworks!

Full Financial Disclosure

I was checking inventory today and just wanted to tell you all what a wonderful job you've done buying our CDs!
We've only got 3 Be the Engine CDs left. Of course, there may be a few sprinkled about Madison's local music stores (MadCity Music Exchange, B-Side and Sugar Shack), but I'll likely be pulling those off the shelf in order to sell them at shows. We sell many more CDs at shows then we do at the stores. I think that's pretty normal for local acts.
For you out-of-towners, we do still have a couple available through CDBaby.com.

Will we print another run? Not likely. So, if you already own one, keep it in a humidity controlled environment and free of finger prints 'cause it's gonna be a collectors item that will make you very, very rich! You might want to invest in those geeky white clothe gloves that the archivists use to keep the skin oils away from 'the materials.'

Of course, if you can't find a hard copy of Be the Engine, you can always download it like all the youngsters are doing these days. It's not as scary as it sounds, in fact, it's pretty easy through services like iTunes, Rhapsody, Emusic and the like. Though once you start downloading, you may not be able to stop. Then, it's just a slippery slope into purchasing an iPod --> Buying earbuds --> Sliming them up with your ear juice --> Offering to let your friend hear this great new tune while shoving your slimy earbuds in their face --> Losing your friend --> Having to make new friends --> Who you then lose by doing the same thing.
Now, where was I?
Oh, right! "Full financial disclosure!" Here's how we're dominating the digital download world since our first release in June 2005:
iTunes $21.66
Rhapsody $0.07
MusicNet $0.48
Napster $0.69
iTunes-Europe $1.54
Total $23.44
Don't laugh! That's at least two pitchers of beer!
Anyway, I have information on which songs get downloaded and which songs get listened to over the internet (a 'listen' without a download gets us a couple of cents). I like knowing that someone over in Europe downloaded Perfect World and that Behind the Clouds has been listened to over a dozen times.
Did I mention that T-shirts make great stocking stuffers?

A night on the Terrace

After over 15 years of drinking beer and listening to music on the Memorial Union Terrace, the shoe was finally on the other foot. Yup, this was a landmark show for me! I can’t think of a more idyllic place to be doing something that I love to do. You’ve got your friends, beverage, a stunning view and music.
This show was a rally put on by the Students for Tammy Baldwin (a very enthusiastic bunch). We showed up around 7pm to load in. I found the usual crowd of misfits, under the “big trees,” dressed for the weather. The temperature had reached a high in the low 60’s and was now starting to drop. I had warned everybody that, unless it rained or there was a tornado or a tsunami, we’d be playing outside (temperature was no excuse). Hats, gloves and layers, layers, layers!
After a while, a platoon of red T-shirted students for Tammy started to assemble near the lakeside café. At least five of them on cell phones at any given time. “Who’s got the posters?” “Where’s so and so with the what’s it?” Man! They were all stoked and ready to go!
We had signed on to the event in August along with three other bands (The Fingers, The Optimistic and Fake Fiction). The show was to start at 8pm with the Fingers. We were supposed to go at 9pm but switched to the 10pm slot so that Fake Fiction (from Chicago) could play to a bigger crowd. We were also supposed to be on stage when Ms. Baldwin arrived to give her stump speech.
After we’d been there for a while we learned that the drummer for the Fake Fictions was stuck in traffic in Janesville. They didn’t think he’d be here for their 9pm start. Let the “Charlie Foxtrot” begin!
Now let’s see. We could go on at 9pm but then, all the people I had informed of our 10pm time would miss our show. The Optimistic could go on at 9pm but their guitarist isn’t here yet and their lead singer isn’t feeling well. We don’t want too much “down time” between bands or the whole event will lose momentum. Damn, is it getting cold out here or what?!

Final solution: The organizers stall with a 15minute limbo competition (very strange). We went on at 9:15 and played a longer set. The longer set enables us to play until 10:20ish. That way we’re able to announce Ms. Baldwin as previously planned and some of our friends that arrived expecting a 10pm start would still get to hear one or too songs.

In the end, it all turned out well. I sincerely apologize to the folks that missed part or all of our set.
Kat nearly froze to death but did her best to put on a good face. Didn’t I say, “Cotton kills?” One thing I noticed was that, center stage had three additional stage lights. So I was staying fairly toasty (kinda like prime rib under a heat lamp).
The sound tech, Joe, made us sound good given the number of comments after the show. A number of people commented on the balance of the instruments and the clarity of the vocals. Thanks Joe!
The boys from Chad Hall were standing in front of the stage waving their Tammy signs. I almost lost it during one of the songs because their dancing was so darned…Unique. Our ever-faithful elbow dancers were almost given a run for their money.
At some point during our set, I commented that we were going to scavenge for abandoned beer pitchers ($1 deposit each) so that we could afford to buy some beer later. Big thanks to those who rose to the call and either bought us beer or found us empties! We got to play outside on the Terrace (last weekend of the year before they move the music indoors). By Thursday, this week, snow is predicted!
