A strong and very complex winter storm will move across Nebraska and Iowa this evening and then Wisconsin late tonight. As the low moves northeast through the area, a tongue of warm and moist air will overtake the colder surface air, resulting in a transition from snow to sleet to freezing rain from south to north by this evening.
Snow and sleet accumulations will range from 1 to 3 inches near the Illinois border to 3 to 6 inches along and north of a line from the Madison to Milwaukee, with slightly less amounts along the Lake Michigan shoreline due to warmer lake temperatures.
Of more concern will be treacherous ice accumulations of one quarter to one half of an inch are expected with isolated higher amounts. In addition...blustery southeast winds of 15 to 30 mph are expected with a few gusts to 40 mph. The combination of glazing and strong winds will likely cause sporadic tree and power line damage leading to power outages.
The freezing rain will diminish to light freezing drizzle and drizzle later tonight as temperatures warm to near or above freezing.
This is an unusually heavy ice storm for southern Wisconsin. Consider postponing or revising travel plans through tonight. All persons shoveling snow will also want to use extra caution because the combination of wet snow, sleet, and additional liquid in the form of freezing rain will cause a shovel’s worth of snow to be very heavy. All interests are urged to keep up with the forecast as this winter storm will severely impact the region.
